Hello,

I currently have a 29G tank and looking for some stocking ideas, the fish that are currently in the tank are:

1 Bristlenose Pleco
12 Neon Tetras

The tank is hardscaped with rocks and driftwood, there also are some anubias and javafern.

Would really appreciate some advice. Thanks

(Filter is Tetra EX700)

Hello and welcome :hi:

What are your parameters reading?

What is the hardness of your water? That determines what fish can be kept.

Does your water provider have a website with hardness somewhere on it?

I'm not sure of the water hardness. You see I use well water, and I don't have a test for water hardness

Do you have a fish store nearby which would test some of your tap water for GH (general hardness)?

Yes, once you know the hardness of your water we can offer stocking advice 🙂
okay, thanks!

but by any chance could I still get some examples of fish that are suitable for this tank that need soft water and those that need harder water

Hi and welcome to the forum. Water companies normally display water hardiness on there website. Now a day's water hardiness matters less as most common tank breed fish like tetra and barbs as they can tolerate a rider range of hardiness.

If your water is soft water; gouramis like pearl and honey would be a great choice. Dwarf chain loaches are another popular option, halfbeaks are a really fun and massively underrated fish, a lot of peaceful barbs like cherry, five band and dwarf gold would be a great addition, Glass catfish are a really cool soft water fish. Cichlids like rams would also do well.

If your water is on the hard side, dwarf killifish would be a great addition, most livebearers like guppies, and platies would work. Most tank breed cory catfish, tetra and barbs can tolerate hard water.

I hope this helps :)
