I have had this small silver arowana ( about 4 inches ) for about 2 months now and he has been doing fine. Today he won't eat ( he tries to eat but spits the food right back out as soon as he takes it in ). Also I noticed a dark patch forming on the top of him behind his fin. It is just behind his eye. I have been doing weekly water changes and am running an eheim professional 2 filter 2026.
The only thing I have changed is I added a charcoal filter to my eheim about 4 days ago. Before that I never had a charcoal filter in at all.
The only other thing I can think of that may have something to do with this is perhaps I am overfeeding him. I give him a big pinch of PACIFIC Plankton twice a day- mabey this is too much. I don't think this is the case because I have been doing this for a month or so and he has been fine with it up until now.
Anyway, this is what I have done: 1) removed the charcoal filter from the eheim 2) did a 30% water change 3) added some AQUASAFE water conditioner that is supposed to provide a slime coating to help heal wounds 4) added quite a lot of CYCLE to the tank.

Is there something else I should do?
Was it the charcoal filter that has had this effect on him?

He is in a 90 gallon tank right now ( I will be getting a bigger tank when he outgrows this one ) and he is looking a little sluggish right now. And as I said before he is not eating and there is a dark patch on him.

One other thing I should mention is that before I added the charcoal insert the water looked a little brownish/yellowish. I think this is because I have a couple of big peices of driftwood in the tank. When I added the charcoal, the water became nice and clear after a few days but I do not know if this had an adverse effect on the arrowana?

I tested the water and here are the results...... AMMONIA - 0
NITRITE - 0.1
PH - 8.0
NITRATE - 0
TEMPERATURE - 80.8 degrees F

He is the only fish in the aquarium.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The arowana may be sulking because the water has become clear, silver arowanas come from the tannin rich waters of the amazon basin so would have appreciated the yellow water, now it is gone it may take a few days for the fish to adjust. Nitrite should always read 0, even though 0.1 is not high you should do a water change as soon as possible. Try feeding your arowana some small crickets from a pet store, insects are the natural food of small arowanas and will bring out the best colouration in your fish.
