Help Setting Up Tank To Breed Tiger Barbs?

Hi,

I am new to these forums so please excuse me if i have started this thread in the wrong section. Anyway i am quite new to owning an aquarium (6 months)and i have went and bought myself a new aquarium, which leaves me with a spare tank. My new tank is 180 litres and older tank is 125 litres. I have really taken to owning fish and take great pride in having an immaculate tank , i really do love my tank. So to get to my point with my spare tank i am looking to breeding tiger barbs. If anyone on here could help me set up properly and just pass on any information which they have i would be grateful.

Few things i would appreciate help with: Sexing my Tiger Barbs? Should i put just the 2 tiger barbs i want to mate in? Diet for mating fish? When setting up my Breeding tank should i do anything different to a standard tropical tank? e.g Temp, filter, hiding places?

Once mature, sexing is fairly easy. Males have a red nose, much more red in the fins and are generally brighter, females less so and tend to be deeper in the body. Males behaviour is also a little different, posturing, posing, squaring off to each other etc. Young fish are similar in appearance. Adult fish in suitable condition, spawn often, the females do not get a chance to become full of eggs, so it is often best to keep males and females seperate for some weeks before spawning. Condition both sexes well with quality food and good water conditions. Put the couple into the breeding tank in the evening and lights out. Well prepared couple will normally spawn at daybreak. Remove both parents when they have stopped spawning and are looking for eggs to eat.

You'll want soft, mildly acidic conditions to get a good hatching.

Thanks for the info. I am having a hard time telling if the tiger barbs are male or female! They all look so similar . I have 8 so i think there should be at least a couple of each sex. Thanks for the help you have gave me , im sure i will be need more advice once i try to get the tank up an running

Probably not mature yet, when adult, the difference is quite pronounced. Obviously, trying to breed immature fish will not work.
