I need to order a lighting system this evening, but I have been thinking too much about it and have now confused myself!

I have a 36" long hood that I need to get a tube for. Therefore, do I need to get a 36" tube and a 30w ballast or a 30" tube and a 25W ballast??

I think it's the second one, but am unsure.

Also, a slightly more complicated question:

I'm mostly inerested in fish, not plants. I want the plants to grow, but I have a garden outside, so the plants in my tank are just to keep the fish happy.

Would one tube be enough? My LFS uses a "Power-Glo" tube, which makes the fish look amazing, and I would like to do the same thing, but only if the plants will at least not die, and better if they grew a bit.

Also, I plan to get moonlights.

Would it be better to get cold cathodes or a blue "moonlight" fluro tube? I plan to have the moonlights come on for 30 minutes in the morning before the main light goes on, and for 2 hours after the main light is off.

Many thanks, apologies for the stupid questions

Steve

Hi, I have a 36" tank and have 30" tubes with a 25w unit and 25" lights. I can only assume this is correct as the 36" tubes wouldnt fit with the end caps on in the hood!

Hi there to answer your questions:

Yes get the 30" 25W tubes

Yes powergol will be fine

Ask your LFS about plants suitable for the low wattage you will have.

One option is go for a 55w power compact there 21" but 55w then you'll have enought light for low and medium light loving plants. This is a Bit more expencive but well worth it!

PS: there are no stupid questions just supid people! :p
