my boyfriend and i are diligent pet owners. we adore our goldfish. Only feed them once every 3 days. we have 2 filters and keep the temperature at a perfect level via an internal thermometer.

We do 25% water changes every week and condition the water.

We test for amonia/nitrates and PH and everything is perfect. we checked 3 times. no fluctuations in temp or anything.

this is what happend in the course of 12 hours.

any ideas???? please save my fish!

Looks like septicemia, you will need a bacterial med to treat this, what are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate stats? What is the temp in the tank and has it been fluctuating at all in temp recently?

the tank conditions are absolutely perfect as is temp. i'd have to get the exact numbers from my boyfriend but we did the test 3 times. and got the same result. He took samples to the pet store and they have never seen anything like it but all the water samples are clear and perfect.

no fluctuating temperature or levels whatsoever. The betta we have had some amonia problems but he's across the room and doing fine in his own tank. This came on ultra-suddenly within 12 hours.

He's being started on maracyn-2 and some antibacterial food. My boyfriend wants to move him to a 10 gallon so he's easier to treat but right now he's having trouble staying level from labored breathing so i don't want to stress him out from movement.

Hopefully he'll respond to the Maracyn which we're giving 2 times a day to the whole tank.

I just don't get it. The tank should be the problem but it isn't. and theres no fluctuations.

i'm thinking that its the food. I gave him some snacks the other day, perhaps the food was bad? i bought it at the pet store (very reputable chain) and it was sealed and not far in the back or anything. I'm wondering if there was an infection in the packaging.

I think you're right with your diagnosis..thats what i figured but the thing is shouldn't the tank be the issue???

eww looks disgusting! ive never seen anything like it! its probly bacterial but what color is his poo? is it grayish or white? if it is, is it stringy?

What did you feed the fish and how much or often? Is the fish with any other fish and how many gallons is the tank? Deseases are often alway present in the tank water, its when something goes wrong or the fish gets stressed out then its imune system cannot cope very well and the desease levels rocket.

Increasing airation in the tank will help the fish a lot in coping with the illness, you can raise the filter so it creates many bubbles in the water or you can add an airstone or something to help create more oxygen in the water, what is the temp exactly in the tank? The warmer the water is, the less disolved oxygen there will be in the water.

Only feed them once every 3 days.

Sorry this isnt much help, but can I just add.. feeding them that often isnt really enough, I know you are probably trying not to over feed, but once a day, as much as they can eat in 5 minutes or so is fine :)
I really hope your fishy gets better, he looks quite bad :(
