We woke up this morning at checked the tank as we always do.
Our female platy was stuck in a piece of the coral that we had in the tank.
We had to break the coral to get her out and her scales are pretty badly damaged.
She keeps sitting on the top of the filter at the top of the tank.
Whats the best thing to do for her??

cor really sorry to hear that. I think she will be ok. do you have another tank if you do maybe consider putting her in there on her own to take any stress that she might get away.

she will prob be a bit dopey for a little while. its like us getting a bang on the head i spose

hope this helps and let us know how she gets on

Thanks matt.

Yeah she is being a bit dopey. She's changed to sitting on the bottom of the tank now which is good.

Surprisingly enough my siamese fighter is stopping any of the other fish going near her, but im keeping an eye on him too.

Unfortunately i dont have another tank for her. I've left the light off so that the other fish aren't so active today.

Will just keep an eye on her and keep you updated :)

A tank doesn't have to be a tank, a bucket or small rubbermaid container will work just as well.

Separate tank, 50% water changes daily with a little melafix. If you keep the bucket in a warmer area of the house you don't even need a heater. You can rig a small filter with an air pump and a bit of mature gravel or cycled media.

o it sounds good then! yer thats a good point truck, the last thing you want is for her to get an infection!

I put some treatment in the water as soon as we managed to get her out.

The only problem with using a makeshift tank with no heater is im not home every day to do the water change and my house is rather cold to be honest lol.

Will get my mum to keep an eye on her whenever im not about. And put some more treatment in in a few days if her cuts are still open. :)

All i can do is wait and see.

She's done it before, but not as bad, so we decided to take that piece of coral out this time!

Look around the tank for fry. I've noticed adult platys that do that are often after a small meal, and don't fit where the fry can.

Make sure that she cannot jump out of your makeshift tank.

There are fry.

She gave birth to them at the beginning of the week.

We caught a glimps of one on tuesday.

tolaks right then, well the fry will get eaten i imagine, depending on what else is in the tank. treat her now, or you will rue the decision.

We thought that the fry had already been eaten, but if that is a possibly reason for her getting stuck in the coral, maybe not.

She's being treated.

Just hoping it works and she doesn't try squeezing into anymore small spaces!

Get some floating plants for the fry, remove the coral, or any other decorations. I learned this the hard way years ago with platys, lost a few adults in a nice pile of rocks.

Yeah we just have plants, a log (which none of the fish can get in because the cory chases them out), a large shell and 1 piece of coral that is fanned wide enough for even the cory to fit in so we left that.

The temperature of the tank is 27, is that good enough for her to heal??
