Can anyone tell me what kind of turtle this is ( pic to the left, sorry its a bit blury )
I just aquired this turtle from a friend of a friend who has just moved abroad and couldnt take it with him. I was told it was a green turtle but after googleing green turtle i found that obviously it is NOT a green turtle!
I need to know what it is so i can get the relevent info on how to care for it.
Anyone help?

I am defiantly not an expert on turtles, and probably wont be able to ID him.
But I know that if you need an ID you will have go get a good clear pic of his head markings and his shell :good: .

there y'go a top down pic, any better? still a tad blury but i cant seem to get a clear one!

looked at the link you posted and he doesnt look like a yellow bellied slider. He has almost exactly the same markings on the face and the limbs, his limbs are a little shorter though! He is a LOT smaller too, though that may be due to age. I think he is only 3 months old or so. Also his shell is has more of a peak and is less rounded than the slider pictures on the page. Forgive my if i sound like a total novice, its because....well....i am, never kept a turtle before so any more help will be appriciated by both me AND terry (turtles name, and yes my daughter chose it!) Thanks for your help

I didnt buy it! As i explained already it was a friend of a friends who just moved abroad! And as i had a spare tank i took the little blighter under my wing! Please read the whole post before being critical!! I asked for help not abuse!

I have a couple of red eared sliders, your look simular to mine when they were younger, shell markings/size porportions/ and head shape from what i can see in your pics. Though if it is a red eared slider the markings on the face would be very obvious. (IF YOU FIND IT IS A RED EARED GET IT IN THE WATER! as this will reduce the stress, and stress can kill a turtle) as for food common turtle pellets are good, mixed vegies, and live fish- though yours may be too small for live fish right now.

Live fish are NOT recommended, since it is unnecessary, expensive and the 'feeder' fish you can buy at the lfs always carry parasites and diseases (though i dont know if this would affect a turtle).
And if you live in the UK it is actually illegal.

nope, not a red eared. Its head markings are almost the same but with no red "ears".
Is it important to know what breed it its ???
From what i read they all have more or less the same diet
and living conditions so maybe its not so important after all

As long as you know what general type of turtle it is (ie basking, bottomwalker, etc.), you should be fine. The only reasons I can think of for wanting to know the species is breeding, and eventual size.

Thanks n3ont3tra! Read those last couple of links you left and they were extremly helpfull.
I know now for sure that it is indeed a basker because....well i put a new lamp in my spare
tank and now hes chilling out under it resting on the rocks i stacked up for him.
Pretty sure its a yellow bellied slider now too.
Going to need to get a bigger tank though, cant belive how big he is going to get!!
So off to the lfs for me in the morning for a nice big tank and one of those turtle dock things,
the wife will be pleased!!! Thanks for your help. :good: :good:
