Hi, I just got fish a couple of weeks ago.. I bought two Gouramis and two Tetra for a ten gallon tank from Petsmart, and although I'm new to the whole fish as a pet thing, I know all about the 'cycles' and what not... but I'm at a loss as to what to do for one of my gouramis and I need help PLEASE!! He or she is an orange gourami and since yesterday afternoon it has seemed to be in a state of distress (near the top of the tank, swimming on its side when left alone, and swimming alarmedly when other fish or the feeding time comes near). Its stomach seems swollen, but I've ruled out over-eating... not possible, b/c its the fish in the tank that eats the least. I've separated it from the other fish but I don't know what to do for it!!! Suggestions PLEASE!!!! Thanks so much!!!!

Have you tested your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels recently? Have you done a water change recently? Do your fish's scales look like they're sticking out? If his/her tummy is very large and the scales are sticking it, it probably has dropsy, which is a bacterial infection. Swimming on the side *might* mean a swim bladder problem, but I don't know much about that. I was going to post a link about diseases, but I can't find the URL. Sorry :( Somebody else around here ought to have more suggestions for you. Good luck and let us know how your fish fares.

Lizard gave you some very good suggestions. Here's a wonderful site by a very knowledgable fishkeeper:
http://www.fishpalace.org/index.html

There is lots of good information there.
Also, if you want to change the font or color of text, you need to type it first, then highlight it and change the font, size, make it bold, italic, and whatnot. I had that problem too when I first started posting!

Hope the site helps!
