Looking for some help and advise, i have a Biube Pure 35L with 3 Platys and some live plants (dont know types). The fish appear to be eating a couple of the plants, dont know what type they are im still trying to search for them. They have almost completely stripped one of the plants of the leaves with only the leaf structure remaining, is this normal?

i have never heard of platys eating plants
do you have anything else in there with them?

I don't know about plants. but in my experience Platies just eat, and eat, and eat.

My Platies always have a dangling lump of ####e, in fact I decide when my tank is utterly denuded of food by seeing when the Platies have no dangling ####.

So, when the Platies arses are clear there is nothing to eat left.

Platys don't eat plants, they eat the algae off the leaves. It may look like they are eating them but they are trying to get at that tasty algae.

If they dont eat plants what would cause the leaves to dissintigrate as there is only the leaf stucture left? The leaves dont look like they have died or are rotting. There's no other fish in the tank.

I've seen my Platies nipping at my plants. I'm pretty sure that it's not the snails that are in the tank cos there arent enough of them to cause the amount of damage that the plants are showing. I personally leave them to it tho...

I just noticed my post was censored, I didn't realise the TFF engaged in censorship

Booo!

What type of plant are they eating?

I dont know what its called have been trying to find that out, i will try and get a picture of it. I'm beginning to think maybe there is something up with the plant if thats possible as looking at it again i dont think they could have stipped it as much as it has been.
Also i have just discovered last night that i have a couple of foreign bodies in the tank which i assume must have been attached to the plants when i got them. I dont know what they are but they look like very small snails or something of sorts. These were found on a different plant. They are small and black with what looks like a cone shaped shell. I will try also get a picture of these but they are had to see at times.
Any thoughts?

Maybe the plant isn't a water plant. My friend had a similar problem,
She told me her fish were eating the plants, but actually they were terrestial plants that were just rotting in the tank.
try get pic up of the plants :D

i think i know what the problem is. either you might not be feeding them enough food. or you need t56o put in some aquatic plant fertalizer. or a mixture of both. not to diss anybody but platies do eat plants or are mine just idiots.

hi i ave 3 platys and they all eat echinodorus mix plant, when i first put the plant in they went for it but now they ave calmed down. i ave another plant in the tank called but they dont eat that 1 (hygrophila polysperma). when i bought the plants the bloke at the shop said the probably would eat it.

That's what I was getting at LOL.

I fell for that LFS trick when I first started with planted aquariums. They sold me a sword that was supposed to be for water but it was not. It turned tan and started falling apart one leaf at a time.

I think it was called an Argentine sword.

Sound like pond snails to me.

I took the coupole of plants out that had been eaten/rotten last night and will replace with new ones. While doing this i also removed the tiny snails of which there were actually 3 of them.

Thanks for the help

I have spotted a further 5 snails in the tank, should these be removed? I removed 3 already, they must have come from the plants when we bought them just never saw them however i will be making sure there clear next time i buy some.
