earlier on today i did a 50% water change i was trying to sort out this problem i have been having with my gravel been covered in brown algae/substance i did this water change and i think the fish seemed a little stressed so i left them for a while to see if they would be ok - well i have just returned one tetra has died :( 2 blue platys have gone completely missing??? i dunno how????? the other one is just lying around the bottom hardly swimming - the other 5 tetras seem fine but my 2 sunset platys seem ok but not swimming as much as usual i have totally gone and messed this up but i didnt know what to do about that brown stuff on the gravel i had to do a big water change and clean all the plants im so sad i cant believe i just killed one of my tetras ive only had them 1 day!!! what do i do?? shall just leave them and see how they get on or do i take them all out the tank i dunno what to do :-(

i feel such an evil person i just found one of the missing platys dead thats 2 in the space of a few mins i cant believe this i feel so so so so bad please dont think im a prat peeps im sorry!

60 litre tank (11.1 gallons)

There is error in calculation; 60 liters = 13,2 uk gallons (or 11,1 uk gal = 50,5 liters).

You didn't mentioned your water values, but you have hard/basic water fishes with soft/acidic water fishes. Not a good compination.

Is that "brown stuff" blue-algae or brown-algae?

one of my tetras ive only had them 1 day

so, you have just bought them - right?

shall just leave them and see how they get on or do i take them all out the tank i dunno what to do

Parameters of water (pH, GH, NO2-, NO3-, temp., NH3/NH4+)?

I'm concerned that with the frequent big water changes you're doing, plus scrubbing your algae and plants, you've killed off your beneficial bacteria and your tank is cycling again. An ammonia spike would cause the problems you've described.

Have you tested your water yet? You need to test for ammonia and nitrite.

just thort id add i have just killed off all but 2 fish i feel like such a prat all i wanted to do was try get the brown algae of the gravel as it was getting really bad and i must of stressed them too much - i dont usually do big water changes i just thort a 50% one would help i suppose im gonna have to start from scratch i just really wanted to make it work :(

well all im left with now are the 2 algae eaters only one of them i can see and hes alive - i guess im gonna have to cycle the tank from scratch then - any ideas what i should do with the algae eaters will they be ok in the tank once i cycle from scratch - do i keep my filter media unchanged or buy a new one because wont there still be some bacteria on the media??? please help someone i dunno what to do........ :-(

Bless your heart  , don't blame yourself, there's gotta be an answer, 50% IS a lot of water but surely not enough to crash your tank -_-

I did a 40% change a couple of months ago and lost 2 of my favorite cichlids within a few minutes....I was mind boggled, how could that be? It turns out it was chloramines, try testing your tap water to see how it is....you just might find a clue there

well i just brought a tetra water test online that covers everything should be here ina few days im gonna look at cycling tank again and do some very strict testing and make sure its perfect my 2 algae eaters have survived through the night so they must be able to cope with stress quite easily! hopefully they will be ok!
