I just did an ammonia check on my 3ft tank which has Convict Cichlids and Red Devils.

The ammonia was pretty high although the tank has been running for 6 months.

Wondering what i could do to get it cycling ?

I did a water change, that should help?

Thanks.

Did you cycle your tank?
If not
well I assume that it is the fish, as the tank is overstocked, and the benifical bacteria probably cant get all there wastes converted quick enough.

I recomend you get ride of all the fish, and start fresh with some small ones after the ammonia is gone.

waterchanges would help as well.

Ammo is a sign that something is wrong in a cycled tank. Usual causes are forgetting to dechlor water, cleaning filter media in chlorinated water, a filter stoppage that goes unnoticed, a "missing" fish that is hidden somewhere, adding fish faster than the filtration can keep up with, or not vaccing gravel for a long time then disturbing it.

Water changes are a must, ammo is bad for fish. I'd go with daily 25% changes until levels drop.

BTW, 3 foot tanks can be anything from a 30 gallon to a 65 gallon in common sizes, all of which would be able to handle different stocking. Posting the other demensions will help.

What are your recent ammonia, nitrate and nitrite stats exactly? How many fish do you have in total and how many gallons/litres does the tank hold? What is your tank cleaning regime on a general basis and how often do you do it?
