can anyone shed any light.
We have had goldfish for around 5 years and they both died, so we thought we would upgrade our tank to a 45 litre, and we put all new gravel, plants, filter, water and 6 new fish all from the same supplier.
We have had them 4 weeks and they are popping off 1 by 1 and now i am down to 2!
The supplier told me that the water was too high in nitrate and suggested that we did a 25% every other day and put this "medicine" in.
It look's like it is working on 1 fish but the other seems as though it has given up.
How can i prevent this from happening in the first place and what action do you suggest i take to "fix" my fish.
Your help is much appreciated. :alien:

Hello and Welcome.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but glad to hear its getting better.

This is a good site for information, and I suggest you have a read of some of the beginners questions. which can be found here.

There are obviously a few, so I would suggest starting with the ones on cycling a tank, new tank syndrome, and the 10 questions.

You've obviously kept fish for a while, so you may not be a beginner and I apologise if this is the case.
If none of these things appear to be what you're looking for, come back and we'll see what we can do.

Good Luck!

A ten gallon tank is just big enough for a fancy goldfish but for a common its too small, you need at least 15 to 20 gallons per fish.
Dont believe what the pet store says, hes only wanting you to return and buy more fish when the others die.

The problem is definatly your tank size.. it is too small for however many fish you had in there, not sure how many but you said you had more than 2.. 45l is um... under 20 gallons i think.. so 2 one common, or 2 fancies would be pushing it in there, keep up the water changes till the water is perfect, find out the exact gallonage of the tank, and dont buy anymore fish :) also what is the 'medicen' called?
