Hi all,

I recently moved my two fantail fish, one Redcap, one Blackmoor, into my parent's room as I'm establishing a new aquarium for them in my room. I've not been able to get in and see the fish much over the last week that they've been in the new room, so what I discovered today has come as a shock. I went in and sat watching the fish and noticed that the redcap's once tall Dorsal fin was now almost gone, there is only a very small amount left, and there appears to be a couple of bits sticking out. All in all he looks very messy.
There are red dots in close formation around the base of his Dorsal fin on each side, and a similar, larger group of red dots near the base of his Caudal fin. His behavior appears pretty standard for his character, he is active, not dosile, and displays a healthy appetite. I have seen him 'flick' once today, but as I say it's only once, so I cannot presume that he has been doing this all day.

I thought perhaps it could be Finrot or internal bacteria? If so, I have some Interpet Anti-Internal Bacteria treatment that apparently treats gillrot, dropsy, ulcers and septicamia, howver I'm unsure if this will do the job. I have given a healthy dosage of Aloe vera stress coat and aquarium salt as well as a 20% water change.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be or steps to take to resolve it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Sounds like a bad case of finrot to me, the internal bacterial med will help treat it (it will help prevent and treat serious septicemia developing in the badly affected area's on the fish, the red dots on the fish could be the start of septicemia) but it cannot treat it alone on itself so i would advise getting some medicine which can treat finrot as well (like Pimafix and Melafix or "anti fungus and finrot" by interpet) to combine with the anti internal bacterial med  .
As with an all external damage treatments, doing lots of small regular water changes to make sure the water extra sparkling clean will help a lot (just remember to top up any meds in the water if you do a water change) too with the healing process  .
