Hey all, im a little worried about my female platy. She is skinny after her first bacth of fry. It's been ~ 3 weeks after she gave birth. I'm starting to see her scale peeling off today. Is that a kind of disease?

She is in a 30 gal with 2 more platy (a male and a female) + 15 guppies + a golden algae eater.

Right now I have gravel, 2 plastic plants and 2 live plants (java moss and I don't know what the other one called)

If anyone can tell me what's wrong with her that will be great.
Thank you in advance.

:hi: to the forum. Introduce yourself in the newbie section. :D

Birthing is very stressful on the fish, especially if they are moved or harrassed after giving birth. Try getting more coberage for the female.

Emaciation shouldn't persist this long... Your fish might have intestinal parasites. You can get medicines for this, if this is the reason for the ailment, but most likely it won't work. As for the scales... I don't know. If they are protruding from the body, it might be dropsy, but they also get somewhat bloated when this happens...

There are pinned articles in the emergency section, and you might want to post this thread in that section if a mod doesn't move this thread before you get back...

Thanks for the reply. I don't think its dropsy because i had experience it before with my guppy. My female platy don't look bloated or protruding , its just a scale that is hanging losely. Oh and i forgot to say she had something growing on her month, kind of like a fuzzy string or something and i treated the tank for 7 days with mela-fix and it disappeared. I'll see what happens a few days later.

Keep an eye on that scale. If it looks like a bump more than a scale, quarantine her. I've had a female platy give birth then get ich through stress, and the warning sign (which I unfortunately didn't realise until too late) was a bump under the scale which I assume was an ich cyst.

ermmm, I took a look at my platties this morning and it seems like all three of them have the scale problem. One of my male platy has some kind of white bump and his scale are slightly protruding. Could this really be dropsy happening? :( I shall quarantine them

Okay just to give u an update, sadly my platy died this morning :-( . I think its a kind of dropsy :dunno: . Her scale are protruding and is very skinny, no stomach. The other 2 platy I have aren't looking too good either.
