Fish Addict
Hi everyone,
Looking for some answers and making sure it isn't something I did...
Today we did some new scaping and added a new piece of wood to the tank, took us about half an hour to do and as with any clean/water change the fish all looked a little stressed and hid in the corner while we did it but nothing out of the ordinary.
We were sitting here looking at the tank about a hour after we finished. I noticed my big (he's very big, easily the size of a hand with fingers spread) gold angelfish start shaking a little bit (a ittle bit like when cichlids shake at each other, but there was something different about it) then all of a sudden he started swimming in complete strange directions, darting around the tank, sometimes going upside down and sometimes smashing himself into the glass lids on top of the tank, he was swimming with that much speed and force. He did this for about 30 seconds and then sank to the bottom and stopped breathing. He struggled to try and swim a few times, sometimes going upside down but he died very quickly after that. He was not bloated or showing any signs of swimbladder issues prior to this.
. He was probably about 2 - 3 years old.
He was otherwise completely healthy and beautiful and displayed no signs of being ill until he started this. It was horrible to see and we are devastated, he was one of our favourites.
Of course since we added the new piece of wood today I am freaking out that its something we might have done or something on the wood. However, all of the other fish are colourful and acting normally (two of my other cichlids are spawning as we speak after the water change!), so I don't think its the wood. I have rams in the tank too so surely you would think if any fish was going to get sick first from something I did it would be them, not my big strong angel.
Just wondering if a fish can die suddenly from a heart attack/stroke/seizure? To witness, it definitely seemed something like that, but I don't know if thats possible for fish?
Naturally we are keeping a vey close eye on the tank right now but I am just interested in people's thoughts as to what might have happened?
Thanks
