ok i need help, i have a 110 l tank, it has been established about 3 months now the water was tested at the weekend and came out perfect, and i also did a 50% water change on saturday and added some safe start as well as conditioner. i then treated the tank with general tonic as advised by my lfs as it doesnt do any harm.

last week i had 2 angel fish die, they seemed perfectly healthy then all of a sudden started swimming eratically (side ways/upside down - back flips / dashing/ darting) followed by death within about 2 hours. both fish were new to the tank and i assumed it was a bad batch yet the third is still alive now.

then yesterday i noticed one of my angel fish which has been in the tank for about 2 months went really shy during feeding and still was when i came home from work today then when she came out she followed the same symptons as the others and died this afternoon, about an hour later another angel fish (been in the tank for a week) went from absolutely fine to swimming crazy in about 5 minuites and has just died now after about 2 hours of swimming crazy.

all the angels who have died showed no sign of physical damgage, no bad fins, no red gills, nothing.

this is crazy and i am only expecting more to die soon. please help

how many angelfish did you have in that tank? 110 Liters is about 30 gallons...really only suitable for about 2 or 3 angels.

you could be looking at ammonia poisoning.

thanks for your response jenste

i had 7 angels but they are all infants the biggest is about 4-5cm top to bottom and the others range from about 2-4 cm as some died i replaced them so im at 5 now, i know its a lot but i am planning a bigger tank again in the next year before they grow to big so didnt think it would be a problem.

i dont think its ammonia poisening as i had my water tested a couple of days ago and all was fine, also would ammonia not affect all the angels at the same time?

this makes no sense at all, its driving me mad.

it can affect fish differently, depending on each individuals immune system.
and while it sounds good to plan on getting a larger tank in the next year....it is not usually the best plan to buy the fish stocking before you have the tank...
things could always happen to prevent the plan from becoming reality...and the very real problem you also need to think about is that yes, they are babies now, but being kept in a large group in a tank that won't fully accomodate them can do a lot of harm as far as stunting their growth and limiting their water quality.

IF any more do pass on, I would really refrain from replacing them until you have your water and tank size squared away.

and also, full grown angels need a water depth (after the substrate has been added) of atleast 18 inches - - preferably over 20 inches

i didnt realise they needed water that deep, my tank is about 16 inches after substrate. i heard angel fish prefered groups of 6 or more, i suppose being told that may have influenced me buying so many.
