HI

I'm new to this site and looking for a bit of help and advice!

I've had my smaller tank set up for the last 10 months and everythings going great - so great in fact I've caught the bug and bought a bigger tank (180 litres). I set the tank up last night to start the cycling process but I'm unsure of how and when to introduce my fish from the smaller tank. Should I treat this the same way I did when I started up?? Can any one help??

Here's a list of fish I have in my smaller tank:

1 x betta
2 x pearl gorami
2 x dwarf gorami
2 x zebra danio
4 x minnow

Thanks

I would start to take water from your water changes in the smaller tank, and put it in the bigger tank, thus putting the same water in each tank so its not as big of a change.
I would have to say after doing this water-change-into-bigger-tank process, about 5-6 weeks, I always go longer just be to safe. Also you may want to get (Or if you already have) a test kit to monitor your cycling process...

Good Luck!

Hi lis

When i moved my fish from a 15 gallon tank to my 180 litre tank i set up the new tank, filled it with dechlorinated water, added all the new plants and some of the plants from the old tank, let it run 2 days so i could check every thing was working.

Then i took one of the filter pads out of the fluval 2 plus which i had running in the 15 gallon and i put it in the juwel filter box on the new tank. I moved all the fish except the hill stream loaches which i couldn't catch and most of the bog wood into the new tank. If i had been able to catch the little sods i would have just run the old filter next to the new filter for a few weeks until the new filter was cycled.

Instant cycle. I haven't lost any fish and the new tank has been running for 5 weeks. I still haven't brought the hillstream loaches over. They are in the 15 gallon at my mums (should be easy to catch if i drain out most of the water). When i get a new heater for the new tank that will go to a lower temp, i'll move them over and put my baby bristlenose plecs and platties straight in the 15 gallon as at the minute they are spread between a 2 gallon a 3 gallon and the 400 litre tank.

Another thing you could apart from running the old filter next to the new is to fill up a pop sock or the foot off a pair of tights with gravel from your old tank and hang it in the new tank for a few weeks to add some bacteria. If you are using the same substrate you can just mix the old in with the new. I didn't do this as i have sand in the tank.

If you do it this way though, don't add any more fish for a month or so as your filter will only be cycled for the amount of fish you already have, adding more fish will cause it to go into a mini cycle.

Hope this helps

Emma

Hi

Thanks to all for your replies. I'll let you know how I get on!

if you are ditching the old tank, just move the filter and some gravel over and throw the fish in. Else scrape some filter gunk out of the established filter and into the new filter to kick off your new cycle.
