I have just got a new fish to replace a dead 1 and my female betta who was so cute looking with her brown and pink skin and her stripey eyes has turned evil. She keeps going up to my new fish(platy) and flaring her gills, shes changed into a purple/red colour and lost her stripes. She is'nt attacking the new fish, just flaring when its near her.Is this normal for them to change o suddenly and why is this happening?

I think it's fine as long as she doesn't feel or look like her life's in danger and same goes to the platy. I have a female in a community tank and she does the same when she feels threatened, but then all the other back off when she starts flaring and then they're all good again. I come home, look at her and she's got the horizontal stripes going then I go and turn the light on and they all see each other and she gets the vertical stripes as if to say look at me. No one is getting hurt, but then again she stands her ground!

You mentioned there were stripes on her... horizontal? It sounds like your little girl suddenly has become unstressed -- if the stripes are gone and there are no more bars of any sorts.. that is a good thing.

If she isn't attacking, leave her be. Flaring is good for them. Betta need to be social, even if it is flaunting for territory.
