Can anyone help me to identify a freshwater tropical fish?

It's about 2 to 2.5 inches in length, and has black and white vertical stripes.

The easiest way to describe it is that its pattern looks like zebra stripes, but whilst I have come across pictures of 'zebra fish' on the internet, it's definately not one of those.

It's currently living with several fire-faced parrot fish, a green terror, a silver arrowana and a catfish.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be extremely grateful.

Can you give us any other clues? Type/shape of fins, it is slender in the body, or more robust? Anything that stands out will help us identify it.

I don't think it's a convict, I'll have to try and get some pictures of it. It has a very slender body and it's eyes appear to be all black, rather than small black dot in the centre of a larger area.

It's stripes are very defined, the 'white' stripes are a silvery-white.

It seems to bear more resemblance to the marine fish that I have looked at, but it's definately freshwater tropical.

Thanks for your help so far...

Yes definately vertical.

It may be a type of Convict after all. It doesn't look like the ones picured in the thread linked in the response above, but I've been doing some searching on google and stumbled across some pictures of Convicts that do look a lot more like it.

It's much like the Convict Tang (a marine fish I know) but with more black stripes.

I think the best thing for me to do is get a picture for you guys to look at.

Thanks for your help.

Does it look like this?

If so it's a black skirt tetra.

How did it end up in a tank with arowana, green terrors and parrots etc? Did you put them together or did you get the tank from someone with the fish already included? Taking into consideration its tank-mates, I would think this is a relatively aggressive fish and that makes me think a convict is most likely. You said it resembled some of the covicts you saw so it is most probably a cichlid. Besides convicts which are neotropical fish, there are several african fish - particularly mbuna - that have vertical stripes. Maybe look at zebra cichlids and the like and copare the shape. A picture would probably be very helpful though.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this question!

It is in fact a Siamese Tiger Fish.

Well done CFC! I searched the internet for hours but failed to find that.

I can't believe this fish grows to 15", the one I was identifying must only be a baby!

Thanks again, I really do appreciate it.
