So I was looking to buy an invert for my freshwater tank from the LFS. I was originally just going to buy a few Cherry Fire Shrimp, but then these crabs they had were larger, cheaper, and looked more entertaining (which I suppose is a bad reason to buy something if you don't know how to care for it). They were labeled as "Sebastian Crabs" and they were in the freshwater section (color is washed out in this picture, but it's the best I can do with my camera):

After googling freshwater crabs all I can find is information about fiddler crabs, which are brackish to marine (my tank currently has corydoras in it, so I can't convert to brackish) and requires some land (the tank these guys were in didn't have any way of getting onto dry land).

Any ideas as to the species?

Red claw crab, pretty much the same story as the fiddler crabs you researched, they need some water with marine salt in it and land to climb out onto :good:.

Blah, bloody heck. Why do LFSes insist on selling brackish animals as freshwater!
Three fingers is right red clawed crab. They can live in freshwater but will catch disease or fungus etc.. sooner or later. Pretty much if it is a crab and its in the fish store tanks, its brackish. Cheers on researching though before you buy.
If you decide to just remeber marine salt and sand, aswell as a place to get out of water. Good luck.

brackish LAND crab! more land than water is needed. 1 gram per litre of sea.marine salt seems fine.

err no 50 50 is no use to a crab. as stated they are land critters. max water % should be 30. this keeps them, with good husbdry, in the best conditions. though people do have good results with the dry area and a pool method, it has to be said that it is far from ideal.
