Ok so apparently my coworkers have given me the nickname of crazy fish lady. I literally had someone drop a container of 2 pleco on my desk! They begged me to take them because they had become too big for her 5 gal.

Sigh

I searched the net and I think they are clowns.

They are about 3.5 inches long.

Help? Are they good community fish? They are large enough where my frogs aren't a worry....but are they friendly?

If they`re clown plecos then you have yourself some nice, placid and shy plecs :good: :good:

They`re very, very shy plecs who will generally prefer to be out and about once the tank lights go off. They`re very peaceful and are in my opinion great additions to a community tank B-)

Not sure what scape your tank currently has but if you don`t already have a decent sized piece of bogwood it`s a good idea to get some if you do plan on keeping the plecs, they love to stay hidden under bogwood and to rasp on it rather than eat most other foods.

that is a relief - - here come the pictures!
one is lighter, one darker...both seem to have the same pattern...

i hope they are clowns!

Nice plecs, however I may be wrong but they don`t look like Clowns to me, at least nothing like my clown anyway. I think they might possibly be pitbull plecs but as I said I may well be wrong. Someone else should be able to confirm for you

100% clowns, and looks to be nice an healthy albeit a little stressed hence why they might not look pattern wise like Elise's.

Thats the same nickname I have  I dont have a desk (if I did there would be a tank on it) plecs & other homeless fish usually end up on my doorstep.

Very nice plecs though.

thank you!

now...does any one know how to tell a he from a she? lol:rolleyes:

Much better explained than me so from....

Planet catfish

Like all members of the genus, males grow elongated interopercular odontodes during the breeding season. Males develop noticeable odontodes along the dorsum as well.

Basically males are much hairier than females if that helps lol.

I had a Clown Peco, ended up returning it as it was so shy! :shout:

yea I actually joined that pleco forum to get some more info - - they think I may have one of each gender - I will have to take a closer look later - they are actually out a fair deal compared to what i heard was the norm - - they did just come out of a 5 gallon tank so my 72 must feel HUGE to them
