Hi, hope someone can help me please, I'm new on the forum and I havent kept fish for years, I used to have my dad's expertise but I'm going it alone this time!

I have a tank with 2 frogs and a shrimp and a few tetras, guppies, guoramis and danios. Ive just got a new pleco from my lfs and it has white spot - :shout:

I dont have an alternative tank for the frogs and shrimp so ive started trying to treat by adding a little salt (2 tsps in 60 gallon tank) and raising temp to 82degrees. Everyone seems to be tolerating these new conditions and have for about 5 days, but the spots are still on the pleco and I'm worried that nothing seems to be happening.

Any advice greatly appreciated! :) :)

You are going to need a second tank IMO. The frogs and shrimp can't be infected buy the ick. Its a fish-only disease. But they will be killed buy most of the readily avalible meds to treat ick. There are some that are shrimp safe but you would probably have to order them off line and I'm not sure how well they are going to work. Just buy a small tank and move the shrimp and frogs to it then treat the fish seperatly. Thats what I did when the fish in my shrimp tank got ick, except I moved the fish, but do witch ever is easiest.

MAKE SURE TO CYCLE OR CLONE THE NEW TANK BEFORE ADDING SHRIMP OR FROGS!

Thanks very much for your help. After posting this is saw the thread about your similar problem. I'm worried that the ich will spread before I can cycle a new tank (or afford one more to the point right now!). However, I might ask if my brother can "froggysit" my frogs and shrimp in his well established betta tank (which i think is heated!?!?). Really appreciate the fast answer Mikaila! :D

you can try triple sulpha or tri sulpha. They treat fungus, bacteria and whitespot but are generally safe for inverts like shrimp. They can also be used on amphibians.

The best way to cycle a second tank if you already have another one running is to move some of the existing filter media into the new filter. You shouldn't need to cycle in the traditional sence so long as you move enough media to support the bioload of the fish you move (or shrimp and frogs in this case).

You can pick up a cheap small tank with filter for about £30 in places like Pets at Home if you wanted to do it yourself. Your brothers tank would probably be ok as both shrimp and frog are recommended betta tank mates. The only problem would be if the shrimp are quite small. My betta killed the cherry shrimp I added to his tank but was fine with Anamo shrimp.
