Hi, I am new to the forum.

I have a 95 litre (20 gallon tank) and currently have two male platy's, 6 neon tetra's and 2 loaches together with lots of snails.

I have been running my tank for 10 weeks and is fully cycled. My tank has live plants.

However, I have just noticed a reasonably large black spider living in the tank also. It has clear legs and quite a fat body! I wondered what was creating webs.

Does anybody know anything about these spiders? Are they dangerous? Will my new loaches eat it?

Many thanks for any responses!

First Of All, Welcome to TFF :)

Im not sure what it is, someone more experienced will probably know, but piccys would be nice, im intrigued :)

Welcome to the forums and yes pic's would be a great help

Or have a looky in the hitchhikers guide at the start of the tropical discussion page!

Unless you wish to keep the spider its probably best to catch and release it.

If it is a regular spider - terrestrial, web building, etc - then leave it if you want to but tbh I'd move it. Put it outside or at least somewhere that isn't the tank.

If it is an aquatic spider-like creature, check out the post on hitchhikers.

Thanks for your responses. It isn't mentioned on the hitchhikers bit. Has a strange sucky mouth thing too! Can't get a good pic yet

I'm in the UK but suspect spider came in on live plants. Completely under water.

Thanks so far

Hmm ok, could'nt just be a house spider which got into the water,i used to feed my oscars house spiders and crane flys, when they went under the water they would still walk around, there legs would look white like a protective bubble type thing,

Is there any chance of a photograph at all, if its bugging you<no pun intended> or your worried the best thing to do is remove and kill it,just incase its a alien species...

Just googled and it seems theres only one fully aquatic spider,so google this name and see what comes up....Argyroneta aquatica

Thanks guys, thats not it. Just had a look and it doesn't look well. Think my new loaches may have had a go. Its got a fluffy black body...weird.

New to aquariums you see.

changing the subject, do you think I could get much more stock in my tank. Looks quite empty at the moment.

Sorry I don't know the measurements. Its a 95 litre or UK 20 Gallon tank. Thanks again

Just looked at that spider....very funny!!

Not sure what type they are. Was told by shop that they are quite small. They are thin, gold in colour with small black checks across thier bodies.

One of my Neon Tetra's has gone missing, was only very small and didn't stay with the group. Can't find it anywhere. Guess it has been eaten by the Loaches who are acting strangely and only staying in one corner of the tank going up and down the side and doing little else.

Now have 5 Neon Tetra's, 2 yellow and red Platy and 2 unknown loaches in a 95 litre, 20 gallon UK tank.
