Help - Fish Dying - Wierd Things In Tanks

Hello All, Can anyone help? I have a 35 ltr tank which has been running without pronlems for the last 12 months. ALl the Am, Nit and PH levels are normal. I have a couple of platys and a sowrdtail in the tank but I have had a couple of the fish die over the last few days. No obvious signs of illness but the fish have been lathargic and ended up trying to bury themselves at the bottom of the tank. After the first fush died I did a water change and found these wierd looking things like curled up litlle spirals, hard to the touch. I have never seen these before and wondered if this could have anything to do with the fish dying - the only thing that has changed in the tank recently is that I have introduced a couple of new plants?

Did the plants come from a separate tank in the store or are they kept in the same tanks as fish?

Did you quarrantine the plants before you put them in the tank?

How old are your fish. some just die of old age?

I'm just a newbie myself so can't be much more help - sorry!

New plants + hard spirals = snails. It is most unlikely they are to blame for the deaths. It is entirely possible that the plants had been exposed to some parasitic or disease organisms which have taken your fish, however, that usually takes some time, they don't turn over within a day or so.

More likely was that in the planting process, some pollutant was introduced, detergent, cleaner, soap or similar. This can turn a tank over in a few hours in bad cases.

Assuming there have been no other external factors, power out, heater failure, etc., (things that don't affect water chemistry), I'd look for a domestic cause.
