Help - Filter Throwing Out Air Bubbles?

Hi

I have an external Eheim Eco filter and have the following problem with it and was hoping someone could help.

Can someone please help I noticed that my filter is throwing out what appear to be air bubbles but not sure if they are just best way of describing them. The filter is also making a noise now and again as if its trying to push more water through it and all of a sudden a shot of water will fire out it. The tank appears to have a "soapy" layer on top of the water with what looks like lots of little air bubbles? I have tried cleaning filter but its still happening. Also the tank has developed a bad smell since this has been happening.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Shake filter left and right while running, it has air trapped in the filter and sounds like it struggling to remove it. If that does not work reprime the filter, turn it on, shake left and right. It should slowly get rid of the bubbles/air pockets.

Thanks for your reply. Would this also explain soapy looking layer on top and bad smell from tank?
