Hi,

I keep reading that the filter will contain bacteria needed to keep my water at good levels so what do I do about cleaning the filter? I know I should do it using tank water, but wouldnt this remove all of the bacteria from the filter sponge? Should I do this every 2 weeks or so??

Thank you :)

It shouldn't remove any bacteria in the sponge by squishing it in water. Your just getting rid of the gunk in it. I usually give my a rinse once a month. You want to make sure that it doesn't get too clogged up.

By gently squeezing out your filter sponges, you're getting rid of poo essentially - and some rotted plant matter if you have any live plants. The bacteria adhere to the actual sponge material. So as long as you don't go washing them in tap water, you'll be fine
