I have a black lyretail male molly about 5 months old, and he has got a bulgy eye.

He bred so I ended up with loads of fry, so I put him in my sister's tank. She hadn't cleened it out for a while, and last night she noticed one of her gouramis was dead. That was when I noticed the bulging eye, it kind of sticks right out and is covered with a kind of blue film.

She did a water change straight away, and her ammonia was 0.25 and her nitrite was 5, so way too high. So, is there anyone who knows what this is and how or if I can treat it? There isn't any salt added to the water, and we use Aquasafe to dechlorinate.

try neomycin or kanamycin as a med. with pop eye it is hard to tell the cause of the condition. It can be a reaction to something totally different than what you think. Pop-eye is normally associated with poor water conditions and it indicates a kidney problem. However, if treated quickly the fish can recover quite well. HTH

Her water is way off - I'd be trying to deal with that too - the nitrite at 5 can be deadly in itself...

How long was her tank set up before you added you male molly?

Right, she can buy some treatment when she goes to work tomorrow. The tank has bene set up since mid December 2003. I think she's gonna do another water change tomorrow, I think she did 50% yesterday.
