hi hows everyone doing? I am new to the marine fish keeping world and would possibly like to get involved but dont know if i have what it takes. i have a 35 gallon hexagon tank right now. I have a heater and standard flourescent lighting that came with the tank. i have a aquaclear filter on the tank as well. all i would be looking to do would be to set up a nice fish only tank, as inexpensive as i can get it. i am not looking to spend a bundle. so heres my question; what will i need to start up this tank? what kinds of fish are easy to keep? is marine fish keeping as hard as people make it out to be? what extra equiptment will i need? Thank you for your time and thoughts and your responses will be greatly appreciated.

I had this conversation with my (top class) fish store yesterday. I say top class since they are highly regarded as the best fish store in Ireland!!
I was told that all you need for marine is essentially:
Tank (and stand!!)
Heater
Good external filter is preferable
Power heads
Marine salt
Water (Duh!!!
)
Thats it.
I asked them about a protein skimmer and was told that for my 180L tank it wasn't necessary, I asked about a Reverse Osmosis filter and was told to forget about it unless your home water was not suitable, I asked about sumps etc...and was told that it again wasn't necessary since the tank was so small. So long as weekly water changes are done and the salt is kept at the right conc. then FO marine is easy to do.
He suggested that I should get some live rock (about 15 - 25kg of it) if I wanted to have that extra bit of filtration and biological activity.
From what I can gather marine fish keeping is simple so long as your not entering into the reef side of things where you have to keep other trace elements at specific levels to keep the reef plants alive.
Ask a good pet store, check e-bay for good equipment, and check back on my topics (by clicking my name above) and you will find a post similar to yours that I asked last week!!
