Hello,

I am pretty sure that the reason ALL of my fish suddenly died in a period of 48 hours is because of "ick".? I have a 10 gallon tank and had started out with 6 glowlight tetras. I waited about a week and a half before I added new fish. I decided to put two cory catfish in the tank as well. Well, within 2 - 3 of adding the two cats, all the fish were dead, with cats going first. The rest of thefish had all the signs of the disease "ick". I am getting new fish, but before I do, how should I clean the tank and what should I do to disinfect it?

Thanks, Matt

u can buy cure for ick from your local LFS, maybe add to tank while empty? if your sure thats wat it was

or take the tank apart clean properly, then start the cycling procedure again... make sure you dont use any detergents or anything, if you do rinse it a million times MINIMUM!

Yeah, if you are positive that they died from ick, I would just do an ick medication, put in and take out the filter cartridge.. you can only kill ick in its free swimming stage, meaning if its not on the fish.

Simply waiting before adding ANY fish for a minimum of at least 3 weeks will eliminate most threatening diseases such as velvet or ICH due to the lack of a host - remnants of any disease 'in your tank' will just die.

Of course, now that you have no fish, there will be no ammonia in the tank and hence nothing for your bacteria to munch on and therefore your all important nitrifying bacterial colony will die off rendering your filter useless and causing great threat to any new fish you add in the furture.

You must continue as if you are doing a fishless cycle!

all of them died? within 48 hours from ick? I've had 2 fish from a store with ick and they lived longer than 48 hours before a cure was added, my recommendation is to rip the tank apart, not litterally of course :p, restart your tank, replace the filter media and clean the filter, clean the tank, gravel and any decorations that may be in the tank then restart it entirely sorry man only way to make sure that you are rid of your disease within the tank... also WHY add an ick cure?! The tank is now empty it's better to restart to be sure!
