Hi, i've develope an interest in bettas, and I want to breed them as a hobby. My question is if I keep a male and a female in a 5gal tank with a divider, will that be ok? Im not ready for breeding yet, I still have a lot of reading to do, but my LFS is having a sale this week on the topfin 5gal tank with filter for $30 which I want to take advantage of before the sale ends.

Keeping them in a divided 5 gallon should be fine. Just make sure neither of them get too stressed out if they can see each other all the time.

What can I do to help the stress?

put tall plants along the divider so they cant see each other or failing that something made of safe material on the divider.

Use plastic canvas (get it from a hobbyist shop) that way they know there is someone at the other side but no big stress, also the idea of putting plants (natural or silk) against the canvas also diffuses the view so would help.

Check out the DIY section for dividing a tank. :good:
