Hi everyone

I'm new to fishforums, but I've been reading for about 3 weeks now (you guys helped a lot with my research). I decided it was time to participate.

Currently I keep a single Jack Dempsey in a 29g tank (he/she is about 2 inches). I also have an empty 20gal cycling, open to ideas on what to stock.

Anyway... I look forward to posting here.

First off, welcome. These are some good forums. A 20 gallon gives you a wide variety of options and it sounds like you have a taste for south american cichlids. You could get some dwarf (Apistogramma) cichlids or some rams. I have had really good luck with my Bolivians. German or Blue rams are very beautiful but can be sensitive, from what I've seen.

If cichlids aren't your thing, you could do a rainbowfish community. They are beautiful and there are smaller ones that would fit perfectly into a 20 gallon, like threadfins. Tetras are always a great classic too... The sky is the limit with your 20gal. Let us know what you end up doing!

Yes, I do love the new world cichlids. Maybe the rams would be a good choice, however I've heard they are kinda tough, and really like soft water. The tap at my house puts out somewhat hard water at a PH of almost 8.0. My JD seems to love it.

Are there some dwarf Africans?

Hmm, I hate it when tap water is hard, I had the same problem at my old place. I don't know of any dwarf africans... I don't know much about kribs, but I hear they are African river cichlids so don't require as hard of water and they don't get all that big. They are cool fish, but again not sure if my facts are straight.

You might look into the shelldwellers or other smaller fish of Lake Tanganikya. :good:
