Hello! I am a proud new daddy of two male bettas. I wanted a pet, but not something noisy or something that would drag me out in the early morning of winter to go for a walk. I chose fish. But since I know nothing of aquarium equipment, I asked around which fish were the sturdiest and didn't require much equipment. I was told about bettas and read up an introductory book about them.

I don't mind changing the water every few days. Keeps me busy. But I hope I can make these little guys happy for as long as I can.

Since I am a newbie, I will need all the advice and help I can get!

I'm looking forward to some betta chat!

Welcome to the group.

Firstly, just checking but you have got them in seperate tanks, haven't you?

Tenks for the welcome!

Oh definitely in separate tanks. I don't need beauties to become beasts. But, I let the bowls kiss each other for about 1 hour a day for their exercise. :D

My babies are in need of an interior decorator. Any suggestions to fill a modest-sized 1/2 gallon bowl? Their bowls are barren.

Bettas need a place to hide and a plant. I recommend silk plants if you don't want live plants (which would require a light) since plastic ones can tear their fins. Also get them a cave each.

I personally feel 1/2 gallon is too little water to be ideal and doesn't give your betta much of a chance to swim. I'd also be concerned that its unheated - bettas are tropical fish and if their water gets too cold they can suffer ich and fungal infections. Although bettas can cope with an unfiltered tank, they'd do even better in a properly filtered, "cycled" tank (where the beneficial bacteria can turn the ammonia from their waste into nitrite and the nitrite into nitrate). So, something to think about as you get into this hobby.

Tenx, are you a fishy breeder geeza! Dang. Everyone has these big tanks and stuff and schools of fish. :look: Oh well. That's okay. I'll work my way up. I'll learn the basics first, without the gizmos and gadgets, so if I ever get hit by a power outage I will know how to do with what I have. For now I have to keep my two babies happy as much as I can. It's hard work, but sweat, blood, love and attention are well worth the investment for my two little guys. :)

Yeah sounds like a good idea Itty. It's always nice to know what you're getting into before you get ino it! :) Good luck in your journey's. We'll be here..
