Just to say hello. I bought my dad a biorb as he had to leave his beloved tropical fish tank behind when he moved. He is unable to care for a tank himself so I bought him a biorb as he is short of space, and I will look after it. I lost my first fish. So starting again. Im sure this site will be a great help. xx

Welcome to the forum, julie.

There's always someone around here who can help you, and we have very many useful articles you can read :)

What size Biorb have you bought your dad? As they're such an unconventional shape, you're very limited in what you can keep, so you'll have to be careful what fish you choose!

With BioOrbs you have to use the substrate media supplied. If you use small grain gravel of sand the filtering doesn't function correctly.

RedSandman is absolutely correct in saying you can only use the bacterial media rocks that came with the BiOrb.
However on top of the media rocks you can place a few nice pebbles or bogwood with java fern and you'll have a nice looking tank.

I had a BiOrb too, I made the mistake of removing the media rocks and replacing with fine black gravel, lets just  say it did not work very well!

Hope your dad will enjoy his new BiOrb and good on you for helping look after the tank for your dad.
