Hello :(

I got a poorly fish it's a female White Cloud, seems perfectly healthy - well apart from the fact it's swimming on it's side and struggles with boyency. No other fish in the tank are acting strange - seems to be isolated to just this one - water quality is ok too. Have taken it out with some tank water, gravel and plant, and placed it in a hospital tank on it's own. When it can swim normally it looks normal, but then flops onto its side :(

My guess is that this is going to be food related, injury, or I guess it's possible it's caused by swim bladder disease? :-( :S I really don't know :(

Is there anything I can do for it? I know it's 10:55pm and my lfs is closed, but was wondering if there is anything at all I maybe able to do, I've heard of salt baths and temperature raising? What I don't want to do is something that will make it worse, but would like to make it as comfortable as possible, I'm guessing a cuddle is out of the question :p

Ack well - first ill fish in fish keeping :( hopfully the last - although I've always been told, where's there's livestock they'll be dead stock.

Many thanks to all of you :)

You have done the correct thing isolating him.

I would raise the temp to 82f and in the morning do a 20% water change, then get to your lfs asap and get some swim bladder treatment..

Keep us posted.

Just an update :)

Temperature has been raised, I've setup a natural light bulb system for the tank, and have shelled and cooked 1 pea and mushed it and added it to the tank. I'm going for digestive / swim bladder problem - I hope so anyway

Apart from her looking rather bemused, she is in good health otherwise, she's already found out if she swims along the side of the tank she can swim upright, or she perches herself in the javamoss I have in there that too keeps her upright.

The reason why I'm saying digestive swim bladder disorder is that we've added some cory's to our tank, this has meant new food, our other fish get the same flakes they've always had, but with the cory's we've added these sink and float granuals and some sinking wafer things. Have spent an hour or so on good 'ol google, it does seem that if she has tired to swallow this food and it's swelled up inside of her, this will push against the swim bladder causing problems. Hence adding the pea - to try and help.

Tis early days yet, and I hope for a good outcome, the rest of the tank is fine :) and I'll keep posting to let people know how things have gone :)

Many thanks once again :)

:D Good news, after its first night in the hospital tank, it's 95% better :) It swims in the upright position - it still flops onto its side every now and then, but it is certainly looking much better than it was :D

Shall keep an eye on it throughout the day and see how it is, will also call my lfs later on this morning too :)

Cheers

Tim

:( she's passed away, about 5mins ago :( really thought she was going to be ok, she started going off again this afternoon, seemed ok this morning. Checked the water quality early evening and that was alright, so I guess it was just one of those things?

My lfs did say that the size of food may have caused some internal damage - but one can't really tell unless we do a fishy post mortem :(

This has been my first death through illness, old age I can cope with, but I don't like it when they become ill. *sighs*

we live and learn, not too sure what to do with her now, not sure whether to take her to the lfs for a pm or to give her a buriel? :-( :-( :rip: my ickle fishy.

She'd have been 3 years this october, was one of the first batch of fry that I couldn't part with.

Ah well.

Sorry it's a sad ending - many thanks again folks :)

Tim

 I'm so sorry to hear that Tim! I guess we all hate it when we lose one of our beloved fish.

In June, I lost my 6 month old balloon molly Mandy (she's the one in my avatar.) I raised her from a tiny fry and she was very special to me because her mother passed away. She was my pride and joy and I was very upset when she died. :-(
