I was rearranging my room last week when I had a brilliant thought..... If I remove all the clothes hanging from my closet, I can fit a few more tanks in there! Amazingly my girlfriend had no objections whatsoever.

My footprint for useable space is 72" long by 22.5" deep. The depth can be increased if I remove the closet doors, which I will probably end up doing anyways. I'm thinking of a maximum of 2 rows of tanks (to be safe with the weight on the floor). For both row's I'm figuring on 2x 20G long tanks per row, but nothing is set in stone yet. These are my favourite breeding/rearing tanks. This being said, I'm now in search of a stand that will be safe and sturdy, but have some questions regarding saftey and weight distribution.

From what I have seen, most stands rest on four legs distributing all the weight to 4 small points on the floor. I would like to have something that is completely flat bottomed so that the weight is evenly distributed among everry square inch of the floor under it. This could be as simple as placing a strong thick sheet of wood on the ground before placing the stand(s) and tanks on it. Are there flaws with this plan for weight distribution I'm not aware of?

As for the stand itself, I've seen some industrial strength garage shelving at Rona that claims on the package that each shelf is weighted for 1,500 lb/681.8 kg (click here to see picture and description). I know the shelves are particle board so I would need to replace them with strong solid wood shelves. I would use the lower 2 shelves only (at least to start  ).

Has anyone used these shelves for stands before, or can anyone see any potential saftey issues? How about the metal utility shelves that are rated from something like 300+ lbs per shelf? I'd be looking at the DIY route, but I don't have any power tools other than a drill.

I've used hammerlock shelving for a pair of 40g one on top of the other. The pic you had looks similar so it would probably be okay. The shelves on mine are rated for 350kg though and aren't particleboard. Definately change from particle board to solid wood if that's what they have. :D
