Heaters Blown No Spare

Hey guys my heater has just popped. I dont have a spear heater as its in use in my other tank.

What do i do to stop the temp dropping untill the morning? I have bronze corys fry in this tank so i dont know how far i can let it drop.

I will put my other heater in for 2 hours before i go to sleep to get it back up a little.

In my 60L tank I have been running off heater for weeks.

Just make sure when the water is poured into the tank, it's +2 C warmer than it should be.
Also, have the water level about 5mm higher than normal, so the lights warm the water too.

I've been off heater for weeks this way. It'll work.
Water cools slower than air.

Hmm sounds good i may be lucky. i just picked it up out the water forgot to unplug it and just burnt my fingers so it looks like its working just no light. I need to make sure it doesnt cook my fish now. I might leave it out and do what you said till i get a new one tomorrow

If its malfunctioning it could shock the fish while its in the water... I would be weary of using a heater that is not working properly.

So true im not gona risk it ill just up the temp by a little then hope it doesnt drop 2 much over night

After a closer check its just the light has gone really faint it does the clicking when u turn the temp down so it switches off thing.

Turned off lights and u can see it faint. Still invest in a new one can use this then for hating water.

And I haven't been using a thermometer because mine broke too. Ofc, I am so idiotic I want my fish to have winter.

Im not taking the risk the temperature in my flat drops alot especially without double glazing. And the temps out side dropping to -3 recently. Its 13C in my flat right now and i reckon it wouldn't take long for this fish tank to catch up with that over night.

The body of water will probably hold its temperature. I hooked up a plugin meter i had laying around on my heater in the 80ltr a little while back to see how often it was coming on.

Long winded on the workings (Put it in a bucket of cold water and measure how much energy used in one minute etc) and it had come on the equivalent of 12 minutes in a week, thus proving the above.

I would imagine it would come on less in a 100.

Definitely wouldn't use it if its coming on but isn't displaying. Is it a bi-metallic switch type? They fail in the on position normally

13C? Of course it's not going to work then, but how was I supposed to know that?
It works if you have 20+, since it only drops as low as room temperature.

If you don't get a heater soon, you don't have much choice.

Just have to pray tonight i guess. I will leave the light on tonight hope that keeps up the temp a little. I know its not good for the fish, but then again neither is cold water

tanks at 21C from 24C in 2 hours so im taking the risk with the heater. they either freeze or possible chance it cooks them. lesson learned keep 2 spares

You could wrap it around with old blankets...

Fair play. However Tom makes a good point, could do a warm water change and wrap it in towels first, in the hope the heater doesnt have to come on much, if at all?
