I don't know heaters are much of a muchness. I've had Aqua one 300 Watt ones which are servicable even though the temp labels/positions are more of a guide and am now using the Eheim Jager heaters because you can recalibrate them. Both of them work but the eheim 300's allow me to indulge my nurosies of having labels mean what they show.

I think the fluval tronics might be a good one to try as the newer ones have a electronic thermostate and don't rely on the old system of having a bit of metal expanding/contracting.

if you are thinking of big fish you will need 2 filters to be safe

hopefully the filters you have got have 16-22mm hose if it has you can get the hydor exturnal heater that go inline on the return pipe of the filters thease things are great as then you dont have any heater in the tank

i have hurd bad reports on the hydor exturnal heater 200w but that has a small hose conection 12-16mm

the 300w hydor are great i have had them running on my tank for 2yrs+ now with no problems

the good thing about them is as the water is heated from the return of the filter it pumps warm water all over the tank so you get a more stable tank temp alround

you wont be able to use this heater if you got a crappy fx5 as it has the ribbed pond hose

i have the pro3 and this heater running on my tank

their is only 1 return pipe on the pro3 the middle pipe thats what you put the heater on

Hi ya, sorry  , i got muddled up i assumed it would be return to the filter, not the tank ,i understand that part now, so is one 300 enough then? or do you have a normal one too? 700 odd lt is a lot to heat! .SID. 8)

well i have 2 x pro3s so one on each filter B)

if your house has central heating and warm then one maybe enought

when i do water changes as soon as i turn the tap on and the cold water starts pumping i hear them click on near right away

my tank temp drops from 86 down to 78 during water change and back up to 86 within 2.5hrs

its so much better not haveing a heater in the tank which didnt used to be possable without a sump tank
