I'm setting up a 10G for my tetras and platies. I was wondering if it was really necessary to have a heater.

The good thing about a heater is it regulates the temperature, so in summer and winter the tank will be the same heat. You can do without a heater if your tank is naturally at 72 degrees, but it will cause some flucuation which can stress your fish. IMO a heater is something all tanks should have.

Hi CatLover. You probably got the message by now that a heater is a necessity! But I just wanted to add that I think 72 is a little low for most fish. Depending on the fish in the tanks, I keep mine at 77 - 82. I recommend that you do some google searches on your particular types of fish to determine the right temp.
