what power of heater would I need for a 40 uk gal

I have a marineland visi therm 100 Watt for my 29 (U.S.) gal so probally a 100 watt would be good for you too because if you convert UK gallons to U.S. your tank would equal 32 U.S. gallons . They are great heaters never have to touch it.
If you keep the tank in a cool place, consider a 150 Watt.

The heaters have Fahrenheit and Celsius on them and range around 30 U.S. Dollars

If you go for a good make like visitherm, then I would go for a 250watt or 200wat depending on how cold the room gets.
