Ok well i just took a look in my tanks and noticed that one of my tiger barbs (smallest) was just stayin out of the way on his own and from my expierience that is no good !

When this has happened to me before it has led on further to swim bladder and then death !

So i read on here that if you just turn the heat up that helps because swim bladder probs are caused with cold water ?

Well my thermometer was reading around 23oC and my heater was set to about 21oC !

So i have turned it up to 24oC and my thermometer is now reading 30oC thats tooo hot i thinks

I thought that if u had the heater set to a specific temp that it would only turn on if the tank water got colder than the specified temp !

Am i WRONG and please would someone care to explain ?

Thanks

Richie

Hey Richie,

There is the heater, and then there is the thermostat. 2 different things. Obviously the heater works, but it sounds like the thermostat is not working properly.

How large is your tank and how large is your heater?

Various accounts will say that you should have 5-10 watts per gallon. I prefer the higher side, closer to 10w/gal. I also prefer to do this with multiple small units vs 1 big heater.

Why? Simply put, the more a heater needs to cycle on, the faster the thermostat wears out and creates the kind of problem you have now.

So think of your heaters like your filters. Too much is not a bad thing.

Thanks alot !

Well its staying just under 30oC soo thats ok i guess ! any higher and i would worry but all the fish should be ok !

Tiger Barbs and Sharks soo all good !

My dad suggested that where my thermometer is situated could be a hotspot in the tank !

He could be right i suppose lol !

Anyway Thanks Again !
