After sticking my hand into the tank to sift some sand, I noticed it seemed hot and it was at a toasty 84F with the heater still on, the heater was set at 74F and after it down all the way to 68F, I check after hours later and the temperature had risen to 86F with the heater STILL on!

It seems I had a case of heater-getting-stuck-on syndrome, with a heater that isn't even a year old yet.
My fishy friends have now cooled down to a nice 78F.

Here's a reminder, especially as it starts to get hotter out, to keep checking your temperatures and heaters!

I've decided to invest in a digital thermometer that alerts you when the temperature goes too high or too low, because now I will be completely paranoid about it happening again

This is why i invested in the fluval heaters with built in thermostat which also changes colour if it gets below or above temperature :)

I ordered a TC-10. It cuts the elec to heaters if temperature goes above a certain level and will even activate fans/cooler if the temp continues to rise.

i check mine everyday, it is set at about 24.8 but can rise to 26.4 if it is hot, but desnt get to hot.

i have a digital and strip thermometer to double check it is fine.

Steph, was the heater a marineland stealth heater?

If so they had a recall on them because that same thing happened and killed tons of people tanks and started fires somehow.
You can get a refund check for them.

Nick D.

I'm aware of the recall, but it was not a stealth, it was an aqueon. I usually use Jager heaters are they are completely reliable, no idea why I had an aqueon in this one!! Needless to say, I have a small jager in there I had hanging around for now until I get a more appropriate one.
