I just bought a complete set up 45 gallon tank and the heater doesn't seem to be working correctly.

The light on the heater doesn't stay on for longer than about 1 second and after 36 hours of being on the water is still somewhat cold.

I'm thinking of just buying a new heater unless someone can suggest a way to fix it.

If i need to buy a new heater what brands are the best?

Thanks!

how many litres is your tank?

roughtly you need 1w per 1l. so a 200l tank needs 200w

a 200w heater is about £15-£20

no discourtesy intended, however, you are setting the high temp on the control switch right?

i am sure you are, and therefore echo the views of the others, ...i would remove it and get a new one.

as i normally tell people, i have seen when heaters go wrong and wipe out the whole tank

my tank is roughly 151 L / 40 US gallons

haha, yeah i double checked that just to make sure i didn't have it set on low

I have exactly the same problem. Whenever I turn the heater a little bit it starts working again, but it jumps off again after a short while. I've set my heater to 28 degrees Celsius but my water is only 20 degrees because it just doesn't work properly and constantly jumps off. Mine is a 100W for a 110 liter aquarium. I'll probably buy a new one too, although it came together with the aquarium and all was (supposed to be) brand new. Bummer.
