Heater Playing Up..

Hi Guys,

My old Juwel heater seems to be stuck at 30c no matter where I set the dial, Ive not used it for al least 2-3 years and broke it out to set up my new tank but alas it seems goosed!!

Can these heaters be fixed or tweaked or am i just as well to get a new one?

hi tag, to be perfectly honest with you, get a new one asap.

IMO whenever a heater starts playing up, pull it out and get a new one. it will cost you between £5-£10 maybe to get a new one, compared to the cost of replacing your tanks stock should it ultimately go wrong.

I never thought of the shock factor!!!
Im off to get a new one today...Its in an empty tank cycling so no worrys for fish just now.

its not the shock factor that worries me 'ive had my heaters off for about a week and the fish have been ok, 'accidentally' obviously that depends on how warm you room is and whether its cold outside etc'

the thing to worry about is if the heater goes nuts and boils your tank, i have seen this happen in shops, and friend's houses many times. the heater plays up, then goes one way or the other, either just not working or boils the water.

also, once in a fish shop, we saw what had happened to a tank after the heater blew, it actually cracked the tank where the heater had been laying.

good to hear, that is why i alway tell people to remove their heaters if they go funny.

even at night and you cant get to a shop, put towels and stuff around your tank, maybe put the heating on, as to me, that is better than what could potentially happen.

Im always up for saving a quid if i can and looked at the juwel replacments and they are quite dear for all they are and dont have a good display on them either so initially I wondered if they could be repaired or not...

I have ordered one from ebay in the end for £11 so no big loss and have no fish in the tank so will just start the cycle when the new heater comes...

Id never considered boiling fish its something ive never heard of, what kind of temperature would it take to do this in a tank then?

Do these heaters have a maximum temp they can reach when faulty or can they act like a kettle and actually boil the water?

well save u buying fish for tea. leave the heater in and there u go boiled fish lol

thank god you did not go for another Juwel heater. this is a common problem with them, even the new style, with the temperatures marked on (incidentally made by Hydor) still suffer. this is one of the reasons i council using two lower power heaters. if one gets stuck "on" it can not boil your fish. if one fails, you have enough heat to keep your fish, till you get a replacement.
