Ive got a 25 watt heater in a 3 gal tank and the temp goes right up to 28 degrees celcius when its set on 25. Any ideas? I turned it off last night and put it back on this morning and it wetnrocketing back up! Ive just done a water change and have it still turnt off. When i put it back on(when it cools down a bit) ill put the heater on to 22, just incase!

is the heater on permantly if not its just a case of altering the temp till it suits you as i never trust a heater temp sign anyways

cheers dane

IMHO for 3 gal you won't need a heater at all (unless your room is very very cold)
it should stay one degree above room temp at the very least at room temp itself.

I have a similar problem to that. I have a heater in a 20gallon long aquarium, can't remember the wattage size but i believe it's either a 100watt or 150watt. Anywho, I have it set for 73F degrees in the tank, but the thermometer is showing 80 degrees.....

Has the thermostat gone bad?

I'm new to the game, but I have a digital thermometer in my tank, and the stick on type. I would trust them more than the heater, and just adjust the heater control accordingly. What I did when I set my tank up was watch the temp, when it got to 78F I adjusted the heater setting until the light went out. Has been good ever since. Hope this helps some. :)

The temperature markings on heaterstats are "for guidence" at best. You should always use a thermometer and adjust the stat until the temperature is correct.

I have 2 tanks side by side (see sig.) and both heaters are set to 74* and most of the time the thermometers show 74*

When it warms up (in the room) the thermometers can creep up to 80* At first I kept turning the heaters down, then off completely. The temperature remained at 80* regardless.

The ambient temperature will effect the tank water temperature :good:

I found that with my 2.7 gall tank, i needed to set the temp to 1 degrees lower in order to get the right temp. Also a hang on back filter worked a treat with the circulation as well as saving space. Unfortunately they are discontinued off ebay, but there are quite a few japanese alternatives still!

Oh yea, also during last summer, i had temperature problems, so i put some ice cubes into a plastic container and let it float. It worked a treat.
