I am looking for a heater guard, but I can't seem to find one. My female caecillian keeps burning herself on the heater :-( . The tank is 55gal and the heater is a Hydor theo 300w. Does anyone know where I can find a heater guard for it, or some way I can make a heater guard?

many thanks,

Maybe take some wire mesh and form it around the heater about 1/2 inch away all the way around? Or even a PVC pipe with slots cut out of it.

Womens plastic rollers (you know the type old folk put in their hair) come in different sizes usually with foam inserts. Buy a packet to suit roughly the size of your heater tube and remove the foam inserts. It will already be spliced so just clip it around your heater. The heater will obviously be longer than the roller in that case use two or cut the second one to length.

I hope this was of some help

P.s. Dont buy the pink ones

Or you could use two heaters instead of one - this means that you can turn the big 300W one down a bit because the other one will be taking some of the strain. It will also balance out the heat of the aquarium better as well.

Just another option :good:

Thanks BigC, I will probably go for the green ones  .

I will be picking up a spare heater soon, incase this one ever bites the dust. I think running two would make things worse. Caecillian IMO, tend to naturally have mild narcolepsy . They will be swimming around active one second, then pass out the next. My female tends to do this wedged behind the heater. The heater turns on while she is sleeping and gives her a nasty burn before she wakes up :/ . Hopefully the rollers will stop her from making contact with it.

Glad to be of help M31
Lets know how you get on

What i did in my tank when this happend to me was, changed my internal filter and added a section where the side grills was and put the heater inside that, the water was being sucked in so the flow poast the heater was good.
I guess though if you have undergravel or external it wont be worth your while this way, just a thought though for you.

Got mine new off ebay for like 99p or somthing silly.
