Just wanted to ask some experts what heater they would use for a 75 gallon freshwater tank. I have used a 300 watt submersible called Visi-Therm Deluxe (made my Marineland) for the past 2 years. It has been working out just fine. Noticed today that the insides are looking rather brown, rather than clean and clear. Is this normal? Anyway, was going to just go ahead and replace it just to be safe. Wondered if I should just buy the same heater again. Or if there was a better option out there. Thanks for any expert advice anyone can offer.

I am sold on Ebo Jager heaters. I have three of them..actually four. I trust them enough to have in my one marine tank. I have had two others and NONE have kept the tank's temps as steady as the ones I have now. Good luck. BTW, you may want to keep two in your tank, one on each side to smooth out temps and as a backup. SH

I am with steel on this one. They are a bit more pricey than other brands but well worth it! Never had a blow out with mine. Besides you can find them cheaper on ebay or even bigals I think.

Thank you both for your advice. I have definitely heard of that brand. I did find it on Big Al's, which I get a lot of my supplies from. The 1st 5 heaters listed on this page, are these the ones you were both referring to? I currently use one 300 watt for my 75 gallon. If I go with two as a safeguard, as suggested, should I go with lower watts on each ... since they will not be working twice as hard?

Another question, since I only used the one heater all this time, I had put a power head (with quick filter attachment) on the opposite end of the tank to keep the water circulating ... and hopefully the temperature at both ends somewhat even. But I do notice the fish tend to like the side of the tank with the heater. Whether it is because the plants are arranged nicer, or it is warmer, not sure.

Thank you both again for your help.

hydor external heater for me, I've had two immersion heaters fail and never again, hydor has accurate electronic heat control and it keeps external filter spay bar free from algae.

Those are good buys on those heaters. A PH will definitely keep the water more equitable with regards to heat distribution. It's still good to have a backup in case one fails especially on such a large tank. SH
