What's a reliable brand of heater for a 55 gallon tank? The thermostat messed up on the last one i had and it raised the temp up to 82F and it never would go down even on the lowest setting.

What brand heater did you use?

82 isn't a bad temp. All my tanks are at 82. If you have a canister filter, go with a Hydor inline heater. They connect inline to the output line of your canister and keep hidden from view. You don't see it in the tank, since it's inline, PLUS you don't have to worry about your fish getting accidently burned from the heater.

You can get a temp controller. Just plug your heater to it and place the controller probe in your tank. It will regulate the temp of your tank.

Otherwise, I've had success with titanium or stainless steel heaters, like the ViaAqua Stainless Steel heater or the Wonn Brothers Titanium heaters. The nice thing about these heaters is they cannot break in the tank. I switched to these types of heaters after accidently breaking a glass heater in the tank. It was a PITA getting the glass out of the tank.

Hi,

I've got the Hydor ETH 300 running on my external Eheim filter - highly rate it - big :good:

Thanks for the help. I've seen the Hydors before but never invested in one. I may just get one as the filter on my tank is an Eheim 2217 and I HATE seeing heaters in tanks. :good:

The last brand I had was (I'm pretty sure) that crappy Tetra heater they sell at wally world. Big mistake trying to skimp on equipment.

82 isn't really that bad when you think about it.....but I still don't like thinking the thermostat is broke.....what if the heater just decides to one day go on up to 90? I will come home to fish soup.

Again thanks for the help. :good:

i have a dualtemp 20/40 and a hydor inline, both seem to be reliable thus far. i really like the inlines, just keeping the kinks out of the tubing is an art.

Thanks for your input Jason.

Until I get a new one I've got the old one in there and right now the temp is 85F. Not too bad for some fish (like the kind I want to keep, I've done a LOT of reading up on the subject) but still higher than I want the water to be.

I'm getting a new one soon so your input was appreciated. Thanks again.
