Heat Mats

Hi,Ive been told heat mats are good for heating jars/tanks.I might use one to heat up jars once ive bred and jarred the males.My questions are:

how hot do they get?
are they stable?

if they are on a thermostat. These can be found for around £25 in reptile shops. And are great

Just a note of caution - I keep a gecko in an old aquarium - and was told that having the heat mat under glass raises risk of the glass cracking due to temp difference across it. Depends on thickness of glass and heat from mat I suppose though.
