Ok, so I just found out that tomorrow we're getting our heat system in our house fixed and it'll be off for almost all day. Where I live, outdoor temps will be high 30s-low 40s (degrees F). Obviously the house will be warmer than that, but because my tank heater was chosen to heat my tank to about 10 above room temp, I'm worried. I have a betta being treated for fin rot in a 10 gallon tank. I'd think with him being injured he needs a stable temp even more. My heater is a 50watt fluval that keeps the tank at about 79-80 degrees. I do have a spare preset (to 78 degrees) 50watt heater. Would it help to add that to the tank as well? Any other recommendations on how to keep the tank temp as stable as possible?

The easiest way is high density polystyrene 1 inch thick cut to the size of your tank and then just use duck tape to hold it in place. If the tank is over 200 liters don't bother it will be fine.

As itiwhetu mentioned, polystyrene sheets stuck on the outside of the tank, on the back and sides. Have some under the tank. Have coverglass on top of the tank.

Close the bedroom windows and curtains and door to trap the heat in the room.

You can put a towel over the tank to help trap heat but make sure it doesn't come into contact with the water otherwise it could drain the water out via capillary action. And don't rest towels or materials on lights because they can catch fire.

If you have a heater in the tank and the power is remaining on when they fix the central heating, don't worry about it.

A few hours without heat during the day, in a sealed room, should be fine.

When I'd a power cut (so no internal heater) I used blankets on top of the tank. Because power cut was 36hrs I added some boiling water (from local coffee shop) to the tank. If you have a kettle you could top up your water & help the heat but be sure to dechlorinate the new water being added.

If I understood heating will be off but power on. For a day your heater will be fine - it will just have to work harder. The comments around insulation will help this. Adding the second heater will help but is not neccessary. Only use it if you trust the thermostat, or will be around to monitor that it turns itself off at the correct temp..

Put boiling water in a thermos or something and float in your water .. I did that when moving house works kind of ok lol
