i'am seeking advice on keeping my tank as healthy as possible. Can you tell me the basic things that i should be doing and also and thing that i should have in the tank. Ok i have a tall 20 gallon tank with 3 small angelfish, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 ruby shark, 3 male and 3 female guppies, 6 glowlight tetras and 2 cories. I have one internal fluval number 2 filter, a 150w heater and a 15w light for the plants. i also have driftwood and plastic pipes for hiding places

Thanks for your time. :D

tall 20 gallon must be american?? is it me or no one use 24x18x15 anymore ( )
i am sure someone willcome and give you loads of help and advice

I'm from the UK (milton keynes to be precise), my tank measures 22 inches tall 24 long and 11 wide, would this be a 20gallon tank as i have never been sure how many gallons the tank was?

Hi QPRneil I take it you support the london side then? Shame they lost to non league opposition last week in the worthington cup

Jokes aside you should be able to work out the size of your tank at http://fish.orbust.net/convert.html

Welcome to the forum!!

i found a calulator to work out how many gallons there are in my tank and it said that my tank holds 20 US gallons but i know that UK gallons are different so what is it in UK gallons? Please can you answer my first question as well. Thanks :D

just seen the dimensions of your tank are rather obscure to say the least, my table only fits for the regular tank sizes :) .

UK gallons are less than US gallons not sure by how much though.

To keep your tank healthy do 10-20% water changes weekly to ensure the nitrAte levels don't build up high. Other than that your tank should stay healthy unless you introduce a diseased fish... which is why its always a good idea to have a quarentine tank ;)

Hey come i'm new too this forum and all i get is jokes about qpr losing to the mighty vauxhall motors!!! :*) Cheers guys for the advice i'm pretty sure my tank hold between 17 and 20 gallons. When you measure the tank do you measure the whole of the tank or just the water, i say this because there is a black strip that goes around the top of my tank and the gravel and undergravel filter takes up about 3 inches at the bottom? Also with the fish i have do you think a siamese fighter would be ok in the tank? :-(

p.s QPR the ONLY team in London!!! :hyper:

Hehe jokes well we try some of them are pretty poor :)

Usually you subtract about 10-20% of the volume that it "says" you should have due to gravel, rocks, filter, heater.

Cheers oh and macclesfield knocked out vauxhaul motors... I remember when QPR where in the premiership!! 8)

I wouldn't keep a betta (fighter) with angel fish as it'll attack their fins... everynow and then you get a pieceful siamese fighting fish which won't attack angels so you may get lucky if you are really keen on a betta... on the other hand you may not and one of your fish may be killed.

Thanks
William

Ur tank if it is 20 US gallons, will hold 16UK gallons as mine is also holds that amount, altho mines a 30x12x15 (which would be called a ;og) and urs is 24x11x11 (which would be called a tall)

ok ok ok my tank measures without taking into account the gravel and stuff 24 inches tall, 24 inches long and 11 inches wide. So that would make my tank how many UK gallons???????

thanks very much for the reply. Now that i have got the gallons right can you advise me on the setup of the tank i.e filter and water changes. :D

according to a programme i have :

Water Type.....................Fresh
Tank Material..................Glass
Tank Shape.....................Rectangular
Length.........................24.00 in
Width..........................11.00 in
Height.........................24.00 in
Wall Thickness.................0.25 in
Tank Volume....................27.43 gal (US)
Tank Material Weight...........46.63 lbf
Water Volume...................25.94 gal (US)
Water Weight...................215.88 lbf
Substrate Type.................Medium Rock
Substrate Depth................2.00 in
Substrate Weight...............30.28 lbf
Approximate Total Weight.......292.79 lbf
Air Temperature................68.00 °F
Water Temperature..............79.00 °F
Heating Capability Required....71.07 W
Approx. Total Fish Length......22.00 in

so gadazobe is basically rote  :)

The supposed calculation is LxWxH/277 = Imperial (or UK) gallons, but i would say take 2-5 gallons off this for the gravel/decore etc, depending on the tank size.

thanks sticklebackrkool i have worked that my tank holds about 20 gallons, cheers.
